Peru bound!

Today my son and I, along with forty other high school students and chaperones are headed to Peru! We will be gone for ten days touring the country from the city to the mountains down to the rain forest and ending on the coast. It is a jam packed ten days no doubt.

I will do my best to post some pictures while we are gone, but may be limited to Internet access. Please keep the whole group in prayer for safety, food, health and lots of fun. This is a once in a lifetime trip for most of us so the excitement is overwhelming. I am definitely dreading the airport which is always a major issue when you travel with this many kids so all the adults need prayers for patience!

I hope to share pictures soon and keep you up to date on my new adventure!

Sole Sisters!

We did another local 5k at Crescent Elementary and what a great job for a first time race. The course was challenging but we had a lot of fun.... Check out the pictures... Buddies make it worth it! You gotta be a kid at heart!

This is really why we run the races... it has nothing to do with liking running
And don't forget to bring.... little buddies too!
Raise them right and when they grow old they shall not part from it! Little Divas!

Had a bad day!

I hate to say it, but sometimes your workout doesn't go the way you planned and it turns into a suck situation. I had one of those nights tonight. We did a workout called "FRAN".... 65 lb thrusters and pull ups... a round of 21- round of 15- round of 9 for time. A quick workout, but not easy. I really had a bad day!  I started out with the prescribed weight for women which was 65lbs, but just four reps into it, I knew it was too much. I was struggling with balance and getting the weight above my head. I should've been able to do it... but I couldn't for whatever reason.

I dropped to 45lbs and went on through the workout no problems, but was not happy at the end. Disappointed mostly, but the thing is this....If it doesn't feel right use your common sense and back off. It was one night; I will get over it. It just wasn't the night for me. Maybe it was mental or physical but either way it wasn't worth risking an injury if my heart, mind, or body wasn't in it.

It has been my experience to move on and not let it detour you to reaching your goal. I will get 65lbs soon, maybe even next time.  The night before was a victory with thee kipping pull up, but tonight sucked so life goes on.

I go in tomorrow with a new day, a new workout , and a new challenge and I am better for it. gotta lose some so you enjoy the victories more!

Until next time... keep pushing even when you had a bad day!

Kipping Pullup!

Kipping Pull up? What in the world is a Kipping pull up? These are pull ups in crossfit were you create a rocking motion to help get you above the bar. Hard to explain so I will show you a video of somebody doing one....

OK so this video explains the technique and you can see how they are doing it. I must admit that I am not this eloquent in my attempts to do the Kipping pull up; however, my goal was just to be able to do it! So now I get it. The goal is to get better... more eloquent and graceful so that it looks effortless and of course to be able to do multiple Kipping pull ups without stopping.

I must also admit that it was by accident... mistake.. however you want to put it that I did it. As the people will tell you that were hanging out listening to the Coach trying to help me get there.. .I did it and was just as surprised as they were. So much so I forgot how to drop from the bar and about sprang my ankle getting down. You have to understand that I way underestimate myself most times so when I do something like this I am completely caught off guard, but when I do it...it is like finding the prize egg on Easter! Great feeling!

I have a long way to go yet, but doing one puts me half way there and doing two (which I did tonight) proves it was not a fluke and I can do this so the mental game is over and now I just have to work on the technique and strength to do more at once.

If I haven't said it lately, Crossfit is awesome and Preacher, the coach, is awesome. He is also the one who helped me with the hand stand push up (another story told earlier)!

Very exciting...... so until next time ... keep trying at whatever it is and you will get it.. your effort will not be in vain!

Music helps you hit the mark!

When I run music helps get me pumped especially if I am doing  a longer run (45 minutes or more). Sometimes it is the beat that pumps me up and gets me moving. My running buddies say they can always tell when a song comes on that I like because I pick up thee pace and run faster. Sometimes it's just a fun song and sometimes there is a catch phrase that stands out in the song that sticks in my mind and helps me get through a tough period. I tend to go to certain songs on my ipod when I am dragging or if I hit a hill that I need to push my self like " Push it" by Salt and Pepa. My running buddies really get a kick out of me singing and panting "push it" up the hill, but hey it works for me. AND... almost 90% of the time as I am nearing the finish line in a race or finish point during a weekly run, I play one particular song to get me across that line quicker.... "Boogie Shoes" by KC and the Sunshine Band. Don't ask me why, but it is probably my all time favorite song. I have lots of favorites, but this is number one for me.

As new songs come out and motivate me I make a new playlist to change things up. I usually start with a slower song and gradually progress up in the beat to get me moving and stay moving until the finish.  The thing about music is you get to singing and before you know it the run is over. So when you are making a playlist it needs to be those great sing- a- long songs so that you don't pay attention to time or pain and before you know it you are through.

My new playlist that has got me moving includes the following songs:

45 minute run for this playlist.

Rolling With the Deep- Adele
DJ got us Falling in Love- Usher
Born This Way- Lady Gaga
Tonight I 'm Loving you- Julio Eglesias/ Ludacris
The Time (Dirty Bit) Black Eyed Peas
Hey Baby- Pitbull
Forget You- Cee Lo Green
Misery- Maroon 5
More- Usher
Hold It Against Me- Britney Spears
Just Can't Get Enough- Black Eyed Peas

But, I always have the old stand by of songs (the 80's -90's collection ) tells my age , oh well...

70 minute Run (5 warm-up, 60 run, 5 cool down)

Start Me Up- The Rolling Stones
Take Me Home Tonight- Eddie Money
Talking In Your Sleep- The Romantics
Push It- Salt-n-Pepa
Fame- David Bowie
Harden My Heart- Quarter Flash
I Feel for you- Chaka Khan
Loverboy- Billy Ocean
Rebel Yell- Billy Idol
What you Need - INXS
Another one Bites the Dust- Queen
Anyway You Want It- Journey
Bad Case of Loving You- Robert Palmer
Don't Do Me Like That- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight- Cutting Crew
Obsession- Animotion
One Thing Leads to Another- The Fixx
Renegade- Styx

Remember running is mental, if you can get your mind off what you are doing, music helps do this, you will hit your mark. In the end, you had fun singing along to great songs and running (all those endorphins) it helps relieve stress. It is a great way to clear your head and start fresh. Create a playlist of go to songs and have it handy and saved in a playlist on your ipod for your next run or walk.

Until next time.... put on your " boogie shoes" and hit the road running!

The Faces of Motivation

As I entered the Crossfit gym, a sign was posted on the door “Motivated People Only.” I have not noticed it really before or maybe I did but I just didn’t pay attention.

I came back out and I read it, I mean actually read it and this is what it says upon closer inspection:

Motivation by definition is the driving force that initiates or directs behavior; the reason or reasons one has for acting in a particular way.

What stands out to me about the definition is “driving force.” What is the driving force that pushes a person to do more or be more? I can’t answer that with words, but I can show you what it looks like. I can show you motivation at 100% just like the sign says and when you see it you will know exactly what I am talking about. It's in this Crossfit gym that you see the "driving force."
It's the grit that comes from somewhere deep within Travis.
Its when Ashley's whole body is pushing for her to make it.

It's Trent doing it when there is nothing but pain and guts left.

It's doing more than Kelly believes she can do.

It's Bonnie fighting back and not letting it beat her.

It's deep concentration that makes JJ overcome.

It's Ashley doing what no one else has been able to do before her.
It's Eddie giving everything he's got to get one more.

That's the "driving force"..... Me standing by these people is the driving force that motivates me to do one more, to go just a little bit harder, to suck it up when it hurts... this is what drives  and motivates me. It's looking out across the parking lot and seeing Jesse all alone and doing it when no one is watching.
Who are you when no one is watching? Are you motivated to give it your best? The sign says there are no second chances so give it your all today.....100%..... nothing less will do.

These people are motivation at its best. I believe motivation is about a state of mind, not our physical condition. Our state of mind drives our actions, good or bad. I have a quote posted on my blog by George Elliott that says " It's never too late to be what you might have been." I realize now at the age of 41 after watching these people day in and day out that I can be at the age of 41 what I believe I can be, what I am motivated to be... it's my state of mind. It's that intrinsic motivation that "driving force" that determines my destiny. I control it.

At the end of the day, did you cross the finish line giving it everything you had?

The sign says... can you look in the mirror and say you gave it your best?

When its over, its the best feeling in the world to know that you gave 100%. It's laying in the floor with nothing left to give but a smile and to say " Yes, I gave it my all today!"

Until next time, JJ says...."Peace Out!"

It's like riding a bike

Biking is back. It's cool to ride your bike. It's trendy. It's fun, but most of all it's healthy. I can remember as a kid loving to ride my bike. I had every kind you could imagine. I had the funky psychedelic bike with the big banana seat, ape hanger handle bars, streamers flowing down from the handle bars, a white basket and a horn to top it off. Oh, and it was purple! Kind of looked like the one below, but remember, I had the streamers, basket and horn so it was much cooler.

I progressed to a more sophisticated bike, a red and white ten speed, that made me look every bit of the 10 years old that I was.

Next, was the burgundy and black BMX bike for jumping and riding dirt hills because I thought I was tough.

I loved everyone of them. I had several accidents over the years... scrapes, cuts, bruises and even a broken arm, but I always loved it.

Even today kids still love their bikes. You see them all over and the mention of a new bike for a birthday or Christmas present makes a kid go nuts. Just like the kids today,  I never thought about the fact that biking was good for me; It was just fun. The thing is though it is good for you. It is probably one of the best exercises that a person could do. Biking is great for your cardiovascular system, for toning and shaping mid and lower body, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, strengthening core, and reducing stress. Even better is it is low impact which is great for beginner exercisers and exercisers with joint problems. The great news is anybody can do it. It doesn't take anything special or any special kind of bike. You just hop on one and take it for a spin around the neighborhood or if you prefer go to the gym and ride indoors while you watch TV or listen to your ipod. As you excel and get better and back on track, your options even get broader from spin classes at the gym, to road biking, mountain biking and crossover biking. There is something for everyone.

I love it all. I have a road bike and two mountain bikes and all are awesome. I have ridden in B.(bike) R. (ride) A. (across) G. (Georgia) events to Muddy Buddy trail riding events and it's all just fun. I look forward to summer as time for mountain biking comes back around. I spent my first day today riding at Dauset Trails on mountian bikes with friends. You can tell from the look on their faces that they're excited to be there, right?
Mountian biking is great. It was cool in the shade, the scenery was awesome, and you felt like a kid again riding through the woods. I just doesn't get much better than that!
I actually did act like a kid again....

Even though we were having a great time, we were there for a purpose. All with the intentions to get stronger and healthier. Toning and shaping our legs, improving the cardiovascular system. Each of us had on heart rate monitors and kept track of what our heart was doing and how many calories we were burning. As you can see below, Ashley is making sure Clay 's is operating right and that he is reading it right. We all had a purpose.
At the end of the day, with a few bumps and scrapes from our over zealous riding, we burned anywhere from 900-1200 calories. It was awesome. We worked hard, but had fun. Actually, I would say it didn't even feel like exercise. It just felt like friends having fun and reaping benefits.
I was excited about the fact that after burning so many calories, I could actually go eat some pizza..... but they made me go to subway instead!  I really wanted pizza!   Until next time.......

River Float Relaxation

This weekend started our spring break a much needed rest for children and adults alike. I spent my first Sunday floating down the Flint in my new kayak... a great start  for me. Actually, I have only been down the river in a canoe at a much younger age, but the kid in me bought a kayak and at the first invite I jumped on it.
Victor and Kay Perdue invited me to tag a long with them and some other buddies, Mike and Misty Chapman and Scott and Polly Chapman. I have known the Chapman brothers all of my adult so I was game to be the third wheel just to get an opportunity to try my hand at my new kayak. I noticed immediately that the river was high and seemed to be moving fairly rapidly. As we prepared to launch, I must admit I was a little nervous, but with my cooler strapped on and two layers of clothes ( it was cold at 10:30am, 52 degrees ), I launched  off into my new adventure following the lead of the girls. Knowing men like all women do, I made the right choice. Kay, Misty, and Polly were great guides and kept me laughing the whole day. It wasn't long before the sun was shining down and layers of clothes were having to be peeled off (turned out to be in the 70s and gorgeous). We couldn't have ask for a better day.

I was right about the water. It was moving pretty good and basically all I had to do was guide the kayak. With a few quick lesson from Scott and Polly, I was on my way. It wasn't long until we came to our first adventure.... tree across the river, probably from all the storms we have had lately. The guys plunged ahead to scope it out and make way for the girls.  We allowed them to be first as we didn't want them to feel unmanly. They did well and found a small opening for everyone to squeeze through, I did OK, but I was certain I would be the one to get snagged and hung in a tree as I went last. Everyone cheered me on and I made it through uneventful, thank goodness!

It was  nice to chat and float with the girls and just relax, nothing but the sunshine and great conversation. I think there was some mention of  Dr. Hekyll and Mr. Jive, but I am not sure. Soon the guys were pulling in at a  huge rock for lunch break. We had everything from fried chicken to barbecue chicken wings to chicken salad. It was awesome to sit on the rocks and sun like a fat lizard. It doesn't get any better than good friends, cold chicken, and cold beverages. I have to say the cold apple cider was pretty awesome.

After a nice sit on the rock, we decided it was time to move on and see what was ahead. With coolers strapped back on and a lot of cold beverages in tow we hit the water again following the guys. We chatted  and let the guys move ahead fishing as we floated and sunbathed for our new summer tans. We stopped along the way to take some pictures of the girls and the great scenery enjoying each others company. We didn't have a care in the world. I laughed and said "I wonder how long it will take the guys to notice we are not behind them?" The girls unanimously agreed that they would not notice, but they were wrong. The hero of the day being..... Scott who came back to find Polly and the girls to see what mischief we had gotten caught in.

We talked about all the things moms talk about... kids, school, husbands, and crazy people. It made for a most enjoyable day.  Mike and Kay made mentioned that the "baby kayaker"  (which was me) might need to take a swim. I quickly paddled away from Mike as I knew he would do it. He was nice and didn't make me flip over as the water was about 50 degrees. The guys even talked about swinging from the rope that has probably been there for years, but one hand in the water was enough to make everyone say maybe next time. I was glad for this as I knew I would have heart failure if I hit that icy cold water. We stopped for one more pit stop to eat a snack and watch Mike play with some toys he brought along, you know how guys are about their toys. Anyway, we laughed, got the crap scared out of us, and sweated profusely but had a blast. We ended the day with the guys helping an older couple get their river boat (if you can imagine this) out of the river so the day ended with a good deed for all. In the end, I am glad I went. I hung out with old friends I haven't seen in a while and made some new friends all in days river float. I think I will have to do it again! The girls were awesome.... may have to do a girls only trip. I think we could handle it just fine.

Until next time or as Kay Perdue would put it "Peace Out!"

Nutrition: The Topic of Conversation

Last night at Crossfit class the topic to open up our session was nutrition. I am not really sure how it came up, but our coach laid it on the line. If you are not eating properly, you are not going to get the results that Crossfit Promises. Will you lose weight ? Yes to a point, but you will not shape and tone your body to look its best if you are not monitoring what you eat.

Zone Diet: Guide to Food Blocks

Crossfit is designed around the "Zone Diet" which is designed to eat 40 % carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30%  fat. Your body needs all three. The purpose of eating this way is to keep blood sugar levels from spiking throughout the day. When blood sugar levels spike during the day from improper eating, your body produces more insulin. When the body produces more insulin, it triggers enzymes in the body to store fat.  Basically, when glucose is produced from insulin spikes, it is converted to glycogen which is stored in the liver for energy, when energy is depleted this is great. However, when energy is not depleted it is not stored in the liver, but into fat cells... not good. Its that simple; You don't need to store it if you don't need it. This is why there are increases in fat in the body and thus why we look like we do when we don't eat properly. A huge problem across America.

There were a lot of excuses last night, but the bottom line is you have to decide that nutrition is important and this is what you want to do. You have to make the decision to change it because it is a healthy way to live and it will make a difference. In the beginning you will have to measure things and weigh them to get a feel for how much you can have, but after a while you will know what a 1/4 of a cup looks like or three ounces of meat looks like. You may have to pack your lunch and snacks in a cooler which means taking time to plan ahead when you go to the grocery store. Getting ready at night instead of waiting until the mornings to pack your lunch helps relieve early morning rush. You may have to change your routine and just like starting a new exercise program it takes time to get into the habit. It is a habit worth developing. Will you mess up... absolutely. The goal is to eat right 80% of the time which allows for a few times to eat your favorites like Mexican or sushi. You can do it you just have to make time for what is important and nutrition is the most important.

There are several great websites that can  give you more information about the zone diet. I like http://crossfitimpulse.com/the-zone-diet-explained-edited which is specifically directed to people in the Crossfit Program. Check it out and be encouraged to know that you can do whatever you choose to do. Nutrition is a choice.

Griffin Spalding School System Embraces Healthy Living

Griffin Spalding School System is piloting a new program to help its employees embrace healthy living. The new Wellness Program called "Enjoy Life" is being piloted in the months of April and May to see if it can motivate employees to make life style changes and it is providing exercise programs for employees to participate in for free. All classes are taught by employees within the county willing to give up their time so that others have the opportunity within the school system to be healthy for no charge. You can't beat that!

The program was the brain child of Christina Crane an employee in the Human Resource Department. Because budgets have been cut and no money was available, she sent out an all call to anyone interested in volunteering their time to help others. It has been amazing to watch how many people offered their time  freely for the sole purpose of helping others. Employees now have the opportunity to participate in p90x training, interval training, yoga, belly dancing, zumba, and run /walk groups. Something is taking place every day of the week and allows employees to participate in multiple activities. The turn out has been pretty good, the classes started out with 7-13 people and have grown each week. The Walk/ run groups have increased as well.

Yesterday employees had the opportunity to get a free health screening that included blood pressure check, blood sugar, cholesterol, body mass index and others items checked for free. It was a good time to see how things stacked up and get a plan for improving health. Health Counselors were available to help employees set goals and time lines and get on the road to success.

I applaud Chritina Crane and Dr. Jones, Superintendent, for putting something in place during times of stress when health means everything. Way to go Griffin Spalding School System.

Above in the picture are Griffin Spalding County employees who came out Friday night to Run the Stepping Stones 5k. Pictured left to right: April Mayo (Crescent Elementary), Lindy Pruitt- Me (Rehoboth Middle School), Spencer Boggs (Maintenance Department), Ed Aragon (Technology Department). It was a great showing for the run/walk groups and hopefully more will come out for the Crescent Elementary Cougar Chase 5k on April 28th at 5:30pm.

Did I just say that?

Its funny, but I have friends and fitness friends. I have my two best buddies in the world and then I have my group at the gym. It's weird. I spend close to two hours every night with them and its funny how quickly you get very close knit. The conversation is somewhat hilarious at points of pain and stress. You say and do the darnedest things. In fact my words have come back to haunt me on more than one occasion. I can remember telling Kat one night as she was struggling through a workout, "you only have three left, you can do anything three times."  Boy, did I later regret saying that. I have been reminded on more than one occasion as I lay immersed in my own drool and sweat..."Come on Lindy , you can do anything three times." Be careful what you say .. right?

Then of course there are the major differences between what men say and do and what women say and do. Men certainly don't hold back in their words with women present and the women try to ignore the crassness of it all as if they don't hear it. It cracks me up sometimes. Everybody is straining and working hard and all of a sudden an odor wafts across the room. While women work diligently to ignore it and move on, it is only a few short minutes before a man stakes claim to it proud of the fact that their exertion has been displayed. The women are way embarrassed, but nonetheless they keep coming back. I am certain its not the smell that brings them back though.

Of course there is much conversation that you just wonder how you get there and I can only say that under duress you are unable to filter your thoughts or your mouth.  Example. One night in the midst of a workout, as I thought I was surely going to die once again (not unusual to have the near death experience where you see the light on several occasions during a one week period). I lay in the floor trying to push out as many burpees as possible. As everything in me was fading to black and I was moving toward the light, I thought if I just lay still and give myself 5 seconds of rest I can do more. As I laid my head on the floor, and began to try and enjoy these fleeting seconds, my brain quickly jumped to Jesse's butt. Not what you are thinking so get your mind out of the gutter. At that moment, I realized that just 20 minutes earlier my buddy Jesse had sweated his butt off doing sit ups and now here I lay in the midst of butt sweat with not even an ounce of strength to remove my face from it. I eventually moved back into my burpees, but Jesse was on my mind each time I went to the mat. Later when I was through the workout, I saw Jesse and said, " Hey, I thought about you tonight as I wallered in your butt sweat." It didn't quite come out like I had hoped. Jess seemed a little surprised and the others just turned and looked wondering if I had just released some very confidential information. What do you say in a moment like this? Nothing much, you just move on and go with it. The filter just shuts off.

These crazy moments keep you laughing and coming back for more. Not a night passes when something isn't said where we look at each other and say "did you just say that."

Crossfit Challenge Today!

Today was the South Atlanta Crossfit Challenge at Club Fitness. It was an awesome day. People of all ages  and sizes, male and female were amazing. It was unbelievable to just be a spectator and see people pushing themselves to uunknown limits and teams strategizing to win the competition. As you already know, if you have ever read this blog, I love Crossfit, and today was the essence of what Crossfit is.

The competition drives you, the people encourage and inspire you, and the workout takes you to a different level. Anybody who comes once is hooked, no exceptions. You become connected to the people you sweat, vomit , and bleed with. Yes, all of these things happen to each of us at some point. How can you not love the guy beside you who pushes through and inspires you to suck it up and do more than you have ever done before. And while it is competitive, the support when you are doing the "Work Out for the Day (W.O.D)" from your classmates is unmatched by any sport I have ever participated in. Crossfit is a sport, not just an exercise program. The camaraderie makes you a family, an exclusive group in its on world. You can't understand it, until you do it, but when you do.... you will know what I mean.

I send out a big cheer to all the participants and coaches today. I am  proud to be part of such a wonderful group of people and I am thankful for my new found friends. Today was a good day for everybody. My team was awesome.. two cheers for Alexis and Dena who made me work harder than ever. Together we took home the trophy for the 1st annual Crossfit Challenge. Thanks for inspiring me and being great team mates! Check out the pictures below for a small glimpse into our Crossfit World!
